DIY Ideas for alternative homeware

Sometimes it can be difficult to find that perfect item for your home, or you find it only for it to be much over your budget. You might think this means you can't have it, however consider if this is something you can create yourself! With a little bit of imagination, anything is possible.

Spray Paint and well.. Anything!

If you can find the perfect piece but it is the wrong colour, this is such an easy fix. Of course I've said black paint in the heading but you can select any colour you can get your hands on. Dreaming of everything in deep plums and navy right now, great grab those. Find a metallic grey that would POP against your bedroom wall? Grab yourself an old frame or thrift mirror and get spraying!

Candles

There are endless DIY hacks with candles. One which became quite popular in 2020 thanks to TikTok was making your own twist candles, simply grab yourself a candle, (paraffin dinner or taper candles are meant to work best) carefully heat in warm - not boiling water and gently twist into shape. Pair this with an old bottle or candelabra for a real gothic feel.

Bottles and Jars Galore

There is so much you can do with old bottles and jars. Thinking back to number 1 is a simple way to transform a no longer needed receptacle, a new coat of paint and a custom label will leave empty wine bottles unrecognisable. Some fairy lights is another cheap and easy way to transform as demonstrated by an empty bubble bath container below.

Feaux Flower Bunch

Feaux flowers are a great budget friendly way to add some style to a variety of rooms, they last forever and never need replacing. The quality and range available has really come along in recent years, so whether you want to go with a single rose Beauty and the Beast style or all out with a full bouquet is up to you. Give it an alternative twist with an edgy vase to really finish off the look.

Knitting

If your granny -or anyone else - ever taught you to knit then grab yourself some Emo as hell wool and get yourself a chunky knit blanket on the go. There are plenty of eco-friendly and sustainable wool options so not only will you end up cosy but you can be kind to the earth and animals too! If you haven't had the pleasure of being taught how to knot there are plenty of brilliant tutorials online, and when is better to learn a new skill than now?

Patchwork

Along a similar line of thought to knitting, depending on your level of skill patchwork blankets, cushions or even complete bedding sets are a possibility if you dare to dream. Just about anything can be printed on a fabric now-a-days, hence the uprising of people wearing socks of their boyfriend or their dog. Grab yourself some funky patterns containing whatever it is you love, I'm picturing skeletons personally.

Upcycling Furniture

If you have a piece of furniture that isn't working for you anymore or doesn't match your newly decorated room but it's going to be too pricey to replace. It's simple, upcycle! Etsy is a great place to source new and unique hardware for cupboards and drawers. Some furniture paint to give a freshen up or a completely new look and it will almost be as if you've bought brand new!

Lace Kitchenware

If you have some old bowls and cups laying around, quickly style them into a stylish decor item with nothing but a little lace and some glue. Again you can easily search online for an alternative fabric and match the colours to your room theme. It's basically upcycling but for your tableware instead of your furniture.
